Laurence Lowe: The Hunt, for two horns and piano

$35.00

The Hunt was commissioned by MirrorImage, horn duo of Lisa Bontrager and Michelle Stebleton. It depicts a primitive manhunt in the jungles of South America.

Prelude is evocative of the jungle itself, mysterious and exotic. The tension of the hunter and of the prey is palpable as the prelude progresses.

The Chase employs primitive motives and rhythms to suggest a frenetic struggle for freedom as a warrior from a dominant culture comes ever closer to capturing his human prey. In the midst of the chase is a dreamlike reverie, utilizing among other things chord progressions from Bach juxtaposed with congas and ethereal horn lines. After the dreams, the chase continues with unfortunate results for one. The form of The Chase is primitive, too…just ABA.

Aftermath, based on themes from the Prelude, returns to the mystery of the jungle, with the hunter victorious but strangely ambivalent about his triumph.
