How did we develop our R mouthpiece cup and rims?

We began by collecting several examples in good condition and measured each model: 6B 6C and 6D. As one can easily imagine manufacturing practices have changed and these older mouthpieces, being hand made, are not very consistent by today’s machining standards (some of the largest variations we saw were between cups of the same model). However, the following similarities emerged:

  • All models had a 16 bore with exact measurements ranging from 0.177 to 0.180 inches

  • All models had nearly the same inner diameter (at 0.60 depth) with exact measurements from 0.6620 to 0.6770

  • All models had nearly the same total volume and backbore volume as well: variances were 0.0189 and 0.0062 cubic inches respectively.

Despite these similarities we produced replica 6B 6C and 6D cups. Martin Hackleman and I tested them and we chose one to be our “R” cup.

The rims are different: C is the widest and is rather flat (with a pitch inward). B and D are rounder with D being the thinnest. These differences were very clear. We are producing B, C and D rims at this time.

R* cups have a wider mate point. B*, C*, and D* rims have this wider mate point are are proportionally wider.

I read many descriptions of the Reynolds mouthpieces and honestly I was expecting a greater difference in the cups. However, when the differences were limited to a few thousandths of an inch, we felt one cup with a selection of rims would serve the horn community well. Considering the variations uncovered in our research you may notice differences between your Reynolds mouthpiece and the Legacy R series, but we feel this is an effective emulation.

How did we develop our KH2 mouthpiece cup and rim?

As with our R cup we began with several examples in good condition and measured each. There was greater consistency which made our lives easier! Every measurement was within 0.005 inches.

This illustration shows the differences between the models we started with: the gray base and cyan line are the King H-2 (which is the inspiration for our KH2 mouthpiece). The Green line is 6B, Red is 6C, and Gray is 6D. From these 3 we made our R cup (Dark blue is 6A which did not factor into our final design of the our R cup.)
