In Brett’s own words: The Hammond Design-Brett Hodge model was a concept developed by Karl and myself that promotes flexibility, clarity, and the ability to play and blend with ease. I have personally had the pleasure to test this mouthpiece on some of the greatest stages in some of the greatest orchestras in North America. While designing a mouthpiece that was suited to my specific needs, we decided to tackle some of the main issues we come across in testing mouthpieces. Comfort: After hearing from our colleagues that rim shape was among the most important of qualities, we decided to use a slightly flat and wide design that has a slight curve on the inside and outside. As a principal horn, ease and flexibility were at the top of my list of qualities I wanted in a mouthpiece. While a lot of mouthpieces may be very comfortable to play, we found that there was often a lack of clarity at the fronts of notes. To help bridge this gap between clarity and sacrificing comfort, we decided to go with a slightly different take on cup shape and combine the funnel and bowl shapes in a unique way. This allows players to get enough air through the mouthpiece, but also enough of the tongue to effectively slice the air in an efficient manner. Not only has this mouthpiece allowed me to be a soloist, chamber musician and orchestral player. It allows me to sing! In my career, I am often required to use a wide variety of colors at all dynamics in all registers. This affords me the opportunity to do so with ease.
